ENHANCED PAY BOX DIRECTIONS
Have you seen the new pay box instructions?
Parking is a process. It starts when a customer first thinks about driving to a destination, before he or she puts the keys in the ignition. It includes the search for parking, understanding restrictions, andpaying for parking. Our goal is to make parking easier at every stage of the process. Most recently we’ve done that by redesigning the instructions on the pay boxes.
ParkIndy has worked with our customers to bring more intuitive instructions to our pay boxes. Customer feedback was key to our development of these new instructional overlays. They have already been installed along Mass Ave, Broad Ripple, and all downtown meters.
The new look features:
- Concise language and graphical depictions;
- Left to right instructions that create improved flow;
- A phone number for 24x7 assistance. Need help with making your payment? Call us, and we’ll walk you through the steps. We sincerely appreciate your feedback, and we look forward to continuing to work with drivers, merchants, and others to improve the system further.
METER HOURS OF OPERATION AND RATES
In the downtown core area, along Massachusetts Avenue and in Broad Ripple, the days and hours of meter operation are Monday through Saturday from 7AM to 11PM. The rate for these meters is $1.50 per hour.
The days and hours of operation for areas downtown outside of the core are Monday through Saturday from 7AM to 11PM. The hours in residential areas are Monday through Saturday from 7AM to 11PM. The rate for both of these meter areas is $1.00 per hour.
Following is a reminder of the free parking holidays outlined by City ordinance:
- New Year's Day
- Dr. Martin Luther King Day
- Presidents Day
- Memorial Day
- Independence Day
- Labor Day
- Thanksgiving Day
- Christmas Day
Free parking holidays are posted on the lower right section of each paybox, and every meter is programmed to prevent payment and display a message that payment is not needed on these free parking holidays.
NEW METER TECHNOLOGY
All parking meters in Indianapolis accept credit card payments in addition to coins and phone payments, making it easier for motorists to park and enjoy the downtown and Broad Ripple areas. The updated system is a mix of single space meters and multi-space pay boxes, providing convenience and reducing street clutter in a thriving metropolis. This innovative technology is environmentally-friendly, depending on solar power and collection/maintenance alerts to reduce ParkIndy’s carbon footprint.
ParkIndy has implemented a state of the art parking system in Indianapolis. Indianapolis is the first city in the United States where all parking meters can both be paid by credit card or phone.

$20 Million Investment
The $20 million upfront investment by ParkIndy in Indianapolis has been used to spur infrastructure improvements in areas served by parking meters. Further, the City of Indianapolis is leveraging $6.35 million of that fund to spur construction of a new $15 million mixed-use parking structure on the southwest corner of the intersection of Broad Ripple and College avenues. The facility will have 350 parking spaces with retail space and a police substation on the first floor.
